The Foundation
Our history ... Our pride ... We are committed to the protection, preservation and restoration of Moncton's Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Cathedral to commemorate this site, built in 1939, and to raise awareness of its importance to the Acadian community and the history of New Brunswick.
An assessment of the building in 2009 identified the need for extensive maintenance to preserve the cathedral.
The cost of the work, estimated at approximately $7 million, was far beyond the financial capacity of the cathedral’s parish...some said it should be considered for demolition!
Monsignor Valéry Vienneau, archbishop who arrived in August 2012, told the diocesans of his intention to safeguard "our" cathedral.
The new archbishop, Monseigneur Guy Desrochers, arriving in 2023, is very pleased with the Foundation's commitment to its mission to preserve the building.
